Protecting Your Privacy and Knowing Your Rights as an International Traveler

The Office of International Programs is here to support your GW International Travel.

Whether on an academic endeavor, conducting research, connecting with colleagues or any of the many other ways in which GW engages internationally, consideration of the following tips can help travelers be prepared:

  • Travel light with your data – Review or remove social media or communications apps and/or carry a dedicated travel device [such as a disposable or other basic phone] with only the essentials. Consider leaving behind any electronic devices (laptop, tablet, etc.) that are not expressly necessary. The less data on your device, and the fewer devices you have, the easier it is to maintain your privacy.
  • Use strong passwords (instead of biometric logins).
  • Be aware of GW's export control policies and guidelines.
  • Inform family and friends of your travel arrangements - Let close family or friends know your travel details in case anything unexpected happens at the border.
  • Carry originals of your travel documents such as passport, visa, and printed copies of airline tickets, accommodation confirmations, invitation letters, and/or conference registration confirmations. Keep digital and paper copies in separate, accessible locations.
  • GW employees may want to carry proof of their employment, which can be obtained through The Work Number. GW employees may also want to carry the most recent three to six months of their pay stubs, which can be printed from GWeb, as secondary proof of employment.
  • The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) does not have the authority to compel access to your device, but Customs & Border Patrol (CBP) does have broader inspection powers and may request to examine your digital devices.
  • Prior to departure abroad, consider reviewing these websites to be informed of your rights and available resources. Record on a device or in physical copy any desired information or contact details.
