What is GW Related or Supported Travel?
Determine if you are on GW International Travel
A GW student traveling to a destination outside of the U.S., including U.S. territories (“Student”) who meets one or more of the following criteria is on GW-Related and/or GW-Supported (by funds or equipment) International Travel (collectively, “GW International Travel”), and such GW International Travel is subject to GW’s International Travel Policy (“Policy”):
- When the travel is relevant to the Student’s course of research, teaching, study, activities (including co-curricular and extracurricular ones), or other areas of professional or academic responsibility at GW
- Receives GW academic credit for the experience
- When the travel is funded to any degree by GW (this includes material support) or the U.S. federal government through research and development funding.* This may include travel with non-GW organizations.
- When the travel is undertaken with or organized by any GW organization, division, department, or office, even if not for an academic or professional purpose.** This includes traveling on a program or trip organized by a Registered Student Organization.
*Travel related to work performed on behalf of a U.S. federal research agency is also subject to the Policy.
**An international experience is considered to be undertaken with or organized by GW when a GW unit, faculty, or staff member in their GW capacity is involved in creating, funding, or approving the experience, or coordinating the applications and selection of participants.
If your travel is subject to the Policy as identified above, the next steps are:
- Check your destination’s U.S. Department of State and Centers for Disease Controls travel advisory levels for High Risk travel requirements/forms at: Planning GW Related or Supported Travel. To participate in GW International Travel to a high-risk destination as defined by the Policy, you must request and obtain advance permission by submitting a High-Risk Travel Proposal in GW Passport.
- Register your travel itinerary, contact information while abroad, and a copy of your passport in GW Passport (see the International Travel Registration link at: Planning GW Related or Supported Travel).
- Enroll in GeoBlue Emergency Medical & Evacuation Insurance.
If this criteria does not apply to you, the recommended next steps are:
- Consider purchasing emergency medical and evacuation insurance through an individual plan - GeoBlue is one option.
- Do not register your travel in GW Passport
