What is GW Related or Supported Travel?

Determine if you are on GW International Travel

A GW student traveling to a destination outside of the U.S., including U.S. territories (“Student”) who meets one or more of the following criteria is on GW-Related and/or GW-Supported (by funds or equipment) International Travel (collectively, “GW International Travel”), and such GW International Travel is subject to GW’s International Travel Policy (“Policy”):

  • When the travel is relevant to the Student’s course of research, teaching, study, activities (including co-curricular and extracurricular ones), or other areas of professional or academic responsibility at GW
  • Receives GW academic credit for the experience
  • When the travel is funded to any degree by GW (this includes material support) or the U.S. federal government through research and development funding.* This may include travel with non-GW organizations.
  • When the travel is undertaken with or organized by any GW organization, division, department, or office, even if not for an academic or professional purpose.** This includes traveling on a program or trip organized by a Registered Student Organization.

*Travel related to work performed on behalf of a U.S. federal research agency is also subject to the Policy.
**An international experience is considered to be undertaken with or organized by GW when a GW unit, faculty, or staff member in their GW capacity is involved in creating, funding, or approving the experience, or coordinating the applications and selection of participants.

  • Consider purchasing emergency medical and evacuation insurance through an individual plan - GeoBlue is one option.
  • Do not register your travel in GW Passport
